Three Great Taste Stars for Our Scottish Heather Honey

Great Taste 2026 Award Winning Scottish Heather Honey.

We have a bit of news from the hives that we’ve been quietly beaming about.

Our Scottish Heather Honey has officially been awarded Three Stars at the Great Taste Awards.

In the fine food world, a 3-Star Great Taste Award is a rare honour, reserved for products that judges consider extraordinary. For us at Edinburgh Honey Co, this is more than a gold badge on the jar. It’s a bow to the short, intense Scottish summer, the purple bloom on the moorlands, and the millions of tiny flights our bees make across the hills every August.

A Taste of Scotland’s Heather Hills

If you’ve ever walked through the Scottish countryside in late summer, you know the scent of blooming heather: earthy, warm, and rich. That exact landscape is what ends up inside every jar.

Heather honey is one of Scotland’s most distinctive honeys. Unlike blossom or clover honeys, it is notoriously challenging to harvest. The bees have a fleeting window each year when Scotland’s hills turn vivid purple. The weather has to align and the hives must be strong, as the bees forage across some of our most rugged terrain.

Because genuine heather honey is naturally thick, with a luxurious, jelly-like texture, it demands extra care to harvest while preserving its raw, unpasteurised goodness. No two seasons taste identical. A rainy August leaves a different mark than a dry, sun-baked summer. Every harvest captures a distinct moment in time and a precise corner of the Scottish wilderness.

Recognised by the Great Taste Awards

The Great Taste panel evaluates thousands of food and drink entries blindly every year, focusing entirely on flavour, aroma, texture, and craftsmanship. To have our Edinburgh Honey Co Scottish Heather Honey named among the top 2% of the very best, earning the coveted 3-Star rating, is something we’ll be raising a spoonful to for a long time.

Here is what the judges had to say about our harvest:

An opaque honey that is almost set, the colour is caramel, almost orange. The heather honey aroma is a delight and this carries through in the mouth. Beautifully sweet, this honey has a long lasting flavour that sings of heather, with a slightly healthy medicinal tingle.

This is a wonderfully rich, amber-gold, creamy honey – on the nose we know immediately it’s heather. This is glorious – it fills the mouth with heather tones and honey sweetness. On the finish we get an aromatic, almost savoury note. It is well-balanced and would be so versatile with just about anything – this is as good as Scottish heather honey gets.

Deep, slightly pearlised amber with the appearance of whipped honey. Rich heather aroma jumps out of the jar. The texture begins with a fine grained consistency which then melts in the mouth to deliver long lasting complex flavours, leaving all the judges wanting more.

Thick, rich honey with the classic intense aroma of a high quality heather honey. The thick, slightly crystallised texture releases the indulgent, rich flavour of excellent heather honey, full of floral aromatics and quite delicious.

It’s a win for traditional beekeeping, unblended artisan honey, and the incredible biodiversity of Scotland’s countryside.

How to Enjoy 3-Star Scottish Heather Honey

With its deep amber colour, floral aroma, and complex profile, this honey holds its own whether served simply or alongside gourmet pairings. A few of our favourite ways to enjoy it:

  • Warm Toast or Sourdough: Generously spread over melted salted butter.
  • Morning Oats & Yoghurt: Drizzled over hot Scottish porridge or thick Greek yoghurt.
  • Artisan Cheese Boards: Paired with sharp blue cheeses, aged cheddar, or fresh goat’s cheese.
  • Baking & Glazes: Swirled into cakes or used as a rich glaze for roasted root vegetables.
  • By the Spoonful: Because sometimes, the simplest way is the best way.

From Our Hives to Your Table

This award is a celebration of that journey. To everyone who visits our shop, orders online, follows our journey, and shares our honey with loved ones: thank you. This recognition belongs to our buzzing workforce on the hills just as much as it does to us.
